An AT&T cell phone tower caught fire in Wellesley, Mass. The burning tower later collapsed while firefighters waited for power to be cut to the facility, according to reports in the Wellesley Townsman and MetroWest Daily News.
Welders apparently began the fire while working on electronic enclosures at the base of the structure. The fire burned for more than 20 minutes and the tower fell in the direction of an empty motel, while a group on people looked on from a nearby car lot. The welders escaped and no one else was harmed in the incident.
The welders were employees of Bellingham Metal Works, which is a subcontractor of Infinite Solutions, itself a subcontractor to Bechtel. AT&T wireless networks hired Bechtel to head up a national GSM, E911 and UMTS deployment program, performing RF design, engineering and construction among other duties.
